lean mfg blogIt is no secret that manufacturers play a critical role in the state’s economy. Manufacturing alone contributes the largest amount per industry to the state’s output with 12% Gross State product. It is the state’s powerhouse industry that is responsible for 93% of its exports, pays $52 billion in wages and benefits to 592,000 people – that’s about 9.2% of the state’s workforce.

October is Manufacturing Month in Illinois and we can't think of a better way to celebrate than by investing in your organization's efficiency and productivity practices.  Being that the economic ecosystem in Illinois flourishes with manufacturers in the mix, organizations need to equip themselves with the proper tools and techniques to thrive so they can positively impact the economy. Implementing lean principles have been proven to eliminate wastes in manufacturing processes and generate a large ROI for organizations. Not only are you more productive and efficient, cutting costs and offsetting other expenses, but your culture shifts into a lean one, with a strong focus on customer value and continuously improving processes across departments to increase it.

“Our operators are so proud. Once you get a key employee to embrace the concepts of lean, that word spreads and then becomes a daily operating habit.” –Becky Metcalf, Executive Vice President (Driv-Lok)

When you are efficient and lean in your processes and adopt a lean culture, you are better able to contribute to the economic development of our state, making Illinois a state that boasts the most efficient companies and a strong workforce. As manufacturing month approaches, consider implementing lean principles to jump-start your organization’s efficiencies and appear more attractive to the next generation of manufacturing workers.

IMEC understands the importance of operating a lean machine for the benefit of all involved – from the manufacturer, to its employees, to its customers, to the community – the economy as a whole. That is why we’ve launched Statewide Lean Manufacturing 101 with Simulation workshops in October. These workshops combine comprehensive classroom instructions with hands-on simulation of a production facility. You will learn how to:

  • Minimize waste
  • Increase profits
  • Retain talent and boost employee satisfaction
  • Develop your team to adopt a lean culture
  • Identify opportunities for efficiencies

Companies that properly implement lean techniques typically see:

  • 90% work in progress reduction
  • 70% space utilization reduction
  • 95% lead time reduction
  • 10-40% productivity improvement
  • 25 -75% quality improvement
