An Illinois, Family-Owned Company always an Illinois manufacturer, Nationwide Glove Company Inc. and its affiliates and predecessors, were founded by the late Harry Applebaum, a young Polish Jewish immigrant, in Chicago in 1917. Harry would awaken very early, cut the day's leather and additional materials for the sewers and other workers in a rented loft, and then deliver milk for the local dairy, with a horse-drawn wagon, on the North Side of the city. Harry was succeeded by his sons, including the late Sol, former president of the firm, and Nathan, now chief executive officer, as well as Harry's grandson and Sol's son, Samuel, now vice president.
The company's first customer, beginning in World War I, remains its largest: the United States military. Nationwide Glove Company has been a prime contractor for the United States Defense Logistics Agency, as well as other military procurement agencies, in all of America's wars and in peacetime, too, for 95 years. During most of World War II, a truckload of combat gloves were shipped every work day by Nationwide Glove from its plants. Recently Nationwide was recognized by the U.S. Army for high quality, on-time performance during Operation Iraqi Freedom. The company, headquartered in Harrisburg on Bauman Lane, is ably managed by Ms. Terry Clark, president; Annette Hubbs; and Bob Painter.
