Made in Chicago Featured Company: Lee Allison Company

In 1994, Lee Allison got the crazy idea that he wanted to create his own line of neckties. The Lee Allison Company was officially launched from a Chicago brownstone in the spring of 1995. From the beginning, Lee Allison neckties (or four-in-hands as he prefers to call them) were always a little bit different, whimsical but sophisticated, and of the highest quality. The difference was that Lee actually designed his own fabric rather than simply buy what the silk mills had for sale.

Over time, the offerings have grown to include bowties, cummerbund sets, formal vests, pocket squares, the occasional pillow, and suspenders (braces, for you Anglophiles). And in 2002, Lee Allison Company added a line of fine cotton dress shirts, its first non-silk offering.  The Bucktown-based company also creates custom-made shirts, suits, sport jackets and tuxedos for a small but discerning clientele.

Written by Lawrence Bouvier, CMRP
Vice President – Fuss & O’Neill Manufacturing Solutions

A large amount of industrial maintenance technicians are approaching retirement age – taking with them invaluable knowledge and experience. Today’s workforce entrants often have high school level vocational training and apprenticeship programs are nearly non-existent. All too often, employers try to fill this void with computer-based learning that focuses merely on craft skills. But hands-on practice is required to develop hands-on skills. Additionally, tradespeople need to understand more than basic craft skills; they need to be expert problem solvers with process knowledge specific to their companies. How do employers close the skills gap?

Atomoweld was established in 1938.  Today the company services customers from all over the country.  The backbones of their business are rebuilding and repairing intricate molds, waterlines for plastic injection, and die casting dies. Their expertise ranges from welding the smallest component of a mold, to over-sized machine apparatus, such as shafts, cams and gears.

Atomoweld welds all tool steels: aluminum, bronze and stainless. The key to their success is their ability to match any metal with the same weld metal, apply it so that it bonds homogenously without distortion, has the same grain structure and hardness, and is dense enough to be polished to the same surface finish as the original tool.
