Like a lot of professionals, I started my career as a teenager, earning money babysitting, in food service and other odd jobs.  Most of the boys I knew were working on farms or in construction.  Those experiences at a young age teach work ethic and skills that are the foundation for a successful future.

Unfortunately, many of these entry level opportunities come with exposures to hazards of which young people may not be familiar. It's important they know how to recognize the risks and protect themselves.  The best employers take the time and have standard work procedures to provide a proper orientation to new workers of all ages.

Northern Illinois University to Host Energy Efficiency Workshop

Manufacturing improvement workshop to focus on energy reduction and enhanced productivity

On May 2nd, the Department of Technology and the Institute for the Study of the Environment, Sustainability, and Energy of Northern Illinois University will be presenting a free, half-day workshop for small and medium size manufacturers at the Northern Illinois University Rockford Meeting and Conference Center from 9:00 A.M. to 12:30 P.M. Dr. Kevin B. Martin, Assistant Professor will lead the workshop and focus on assisting participants with identifying and implementing ways to reduce energy use, boost productivity, and achieve measurable energy savings.

Buy America Transit Supply Chain Connectivity Forum

The Buy America Transit Supply Chain Connectivity Forum is designed to bring large transit OEMs and Tier 1 Suppliers together with smaller, capable and interested U.S. manufacturers in an effort to facilitate the use of a higher percentage of domestic suppliers in transit products and systems. The Forum will provide a venue for smaller manufacturers to learn what products are needed and find out more about investments they need to consider when entering the transit industry.

Evolving Technology and Emerging Competitive Advantage

In March IMEC partnered with the Northern Illinois University Department of Technology and Kaskaskia College Center for Business and Industry to provide a presentation on best practices in Energy Efficiency.

Industrial electricity prices have risen 36% over the last 10 years.  Researching energy bills and technologies should be part of continuous improvement efforts as emerging technologies are lessening the burden of controlling future costs.
