Facility Startup Checklist

Many organizations are maintaining or re-starting operations at their facility. Here are some guidelines that can help you ensure employee safety and proper machine and process startup as you resume operations:

Pre- Employee Entry Checklist

Safety

  • General infrastructure check; lighting, restrooms, hvac, etc
  • Check that emergency lighting is working
  • Check that all paths and emergency exits are clear
  • Check that all mandated employee training is up to date
  • Check if any new chemicals (disinfection/sanitation) been introduced? If so update Hazcom program
  • Check for and dispose of any expired materials
  • Review all necessary startup procedure before turning any machinery on
  • Employee concerns addressed through additional PPE or other protective barriers

Network/Communication Systems

  • Check that facility network is working
  • Check that timekeeping system is working
  • Check that ERP/CRM/inventory control systems are working
    • Adequate inventories available (PPE, raw materials, spare parts, etc)
  • Check wireless communications between workers, machines, networks are working

Machine/Process Startup Checklist

*These are general guidelines. If you have machines specific procedures refer to those.

Hydraulic Systems

  • Check fluid levels
  • Check for puddles/leaks
  • Replace filters and fluids as necessary
  • Check tube/hose condition
  • Drain/clean reservoir
  • Follow recommended startup procedures, verify safety features are operational and monitor to unusual noises & vibrations
  • Check for leaks after startup

Electrical Cabinets

  • Replace cabinet air filters
  • Vacuum out dust/dirt buildup
  • Check for damaged components

Pneumatic Systems

  • Drain water from tanks/lines
  • Fill oilers
  • Check compressor fluid levels
  • Follow recommended startup procedures, verify safety features are operational and monitor to unusual noises & vibrations
  • Listen for air leaks after startup

Mechanical Systems

  • Check gearbox fluid levels
  • Check for stuck conveyor rollers
  • Grease motors/bearings/chains
  • Follow recommended startup procedures, verify safety features are operational and monitor to unusual noises & vibrations

Chillers/Cooling Systems

  • Check that airflow isn’t blocked
  • Check fluid levels
  • Replace necessary filters
  • Follow recommended startup procedures, verify safety features are operational and monitor to unusual noises & vibrations

Material Handling Systems

  • Complete all necessary checklists prior to use
  • Visually inspect all equipment without a formal pre-use checklist
  • Follow recommended startup procedures, verify safety features are operational and monitor to unusual noises & vibrations
