How is Your Respiratory Protection Program?

Posted by Lori Amerman on Apr 16, 2020 9:01:03 AM

Respiratory Protection Programs are a little more complicated than other aspects of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for many employers.  There are annual requirements for training and review.  Now is a good time to consider the current state of your program and make some goals as needed to maintain and improve.

Even for the most prepared, refresher training is always a good reminder.  What we practice becomes habit.  It is very important that the user follow proper procedures for putting it on and taking it off.

Voluntary use of respirators is currently high.  Employers have some education requirements when it is deemed not required.  They must understand how to properly use, maintain and care for the respirator.  Do you understand the limitations of the equipment?  Always follow manufacturer instructions.

Unfortunately, counterfeit products find their way into supplies.  It is important to purchase from reputable sources and understand markings of legitimate PPE.

Employers should be monitoring proper use and hygiene with respirator usage.  Retrain where gaps are discovered.

The IMEC safety and health team of technical specialists and extended resource providers is available to help with your questions and program development.
